Flora McLachlan is a printmaker living and working near the the Preseli hills in West Wales, on the edge of a wild moor, surrounded by lichened trees. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) and is currently doing an MA in Fine Art at Aberystwyth School of Art. Exhibited at the Jardine Gallery is a selection of Flora’s limited edition etching prints full of shadowy woodland, creatures and atmosphere.
Her work features spirit animals from the ancient countryside of wild forests and tangled hedgerows. Some of the animals are real while others are from the realms of mythology and faerie folklore. Flora’s etching use a large amount of shadow, a process that requires repeatedly dipping the plate in acid to bite deeper into the plate and bring out the deeper shadows in her work. It is a very time consuming process.
She prints on her own large and small Rochat etching presses.
