John Milner - Geckoman
I was a geek teenager, and, in the extensive menagerie I had throughout my parents house, I kept geckos... so I know these animals really well. I went on to study biology at university and increased my knowledge of the anatomy of these, and other animals. My fascination never left me, though the interest in formal study certainly did. It was inevitable that I'd return to painting and sculpting the animals I love, and I've been really lucky to be able to make a career out of it.
In 1996 my Dad took early retirement and bought a wheel and kiln, which
gradually I kind of took over – Thanks Dad! My pots then were frankly not
up to much, but the geckos went brilliantly the first time I ever put them
out on a stall. A little kick from the government... well, you can only
be a musician on the dole for so long... and I decided to go for it and
start in business. I've been working with ceramics ever since, and in 2009
started to model in epoxy putty in order to get much finer detail and have
my work cast in both brass and bronze.
